This collection of new essays considers the implications of this scientifically impossible (but perhaps imminent) event, examining real-world responses to pandemic contagion and civic chaos, as well as those from Hollywood and popular culture. The contributors discuss the zombie apocalypse as a metaphor for actual catastrophes and estimate the probabilities of human survival and behavior during an undead invasion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zombies have become an increasingly popular object of research in academic studies and, of course, in popular media. Over the past decade, they have been employed to explain mathematical equations, vortex phenomena in astrophysics, the need for improved laws, issues within higher education, and even the structure of human societies. Despite the surge of interest in the zombie as a critical metaphor, no coherent theoretical framework for studying the zombie actually exists. Addressing this current gap in the literature, Theorising the Contemporary Zombie defines zombiism as a means of theorising and examining various issues of society in any given era by immersing those social issues within the destabilising context of apocalyptic crisis; and applying this definition, the volume considers issues including gender, sexuality, family, literature, health, popular culture and extinction.

It pits players against each other in a nightmarish near-future where the dead have returned to life and are feasting on the living. Players build their own factions, representing desperate civilians, military personnel, or hardened survivors, and must explore, scavenge, and fight in order to survive another day. Rival gangs are only one of the dangers they face – mindless zombies wander the streets, driven by insatiable hunger and drawn by the sound of combat! A gang's ability to scavenge is as vital as their combat ability, and players must ensure that they have the resources to survive in this hostile world. Scenarios and campaigns allow you to develop your gang, gain experience and recruit new henchmen to build up your strength or replace the inevitable casualties of the zombie apocalypse.

Knopf, Kevin Michael Scott, Andrew Alan Smith, and Terrence R. Wandtke In comic books, superhero stories often depict working-class characters who struggle to make ends meet, lead fulfilling lives, and remain faithful to themselves and their own personal code of ethics. Working-Class Comic Book Heroes: Class Conflict and Populist Politics in Comics examines working-class superheroes and other protagonists who populate heroic narratives in serialized comic books. Essayists analyze and deconstruct these figures, viewing their roles as fictional stand-ins for real-world blue-collar characters. Informed by new working-class studies, the book also discusses how often working-class writers and artists created these characters. Notably Jack Kirby, a working-class Jewish artist, created several of the most recognizable working-class superheroes, including Captain America and the Thing. Contributors weigh industry histories and marketing concerns as well as the fan community's changing attitudes towards class signifiers in superhero adventures. The often financially strapped Spider-Man proves to be a touchstone figure in many of these essays. Grant Morrison's Superman, Marvel's Shamrock, Alan Moore and David Lloyd's V for Vendetta, and The Walking Dead receive thoughtful treatment. While there have been many scholarly works concerned with issues of race and gender in comics, this book stands as the first to deal explicitly with issues of class, cultural capital, and economics as its main themes.

Hundreds of years ago, the word "zombie" may have been handed down from jumbie, a West Indian term for ghost, or nzambi, meaning "spirit of the dead," in Congo, Africa. Brainless, reanimated corpses have long haunted the myths of many cultures around the world. The most shocking and fascinating zombie origins and lore are compiled in the unnerving pages of this high-interest volume, which also includes intriguing scientific roots of the zombie myth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the zombie become such a pervasive figure in twenty-first-century popular culture? John Vervaeke, Christopher Mastropietro and Filip Miscevic seek to answer this question by arguing that particular aspects of the zombie, common to a variety of media forms, reflect a crisis in modern Western culture. The authors examine the essential features of the zombie, including mindlessness, ugliness and homelessness, and argue that these reflect the outlook of the contemporary West and its attendant zeitgeists of anxiety, alienation, disconnection and disenfranchisement. They trace the relationship between zombies and the theme of secular apocalypse, demonstrating that the zombie draws its power from being a perversion of the Christian mythos of death and resurrection. Symbolic of a lost Christian worldview, the zombie represents a world that can no longer explain itself, nor provide us with instructions for how to live within it. The concept of 'domicide' or the destruction of home is developed to describe the modern crisis of meaning that the zombie both represents and reflects. This is illustrated using case studies including the relocation of the Anishinaabe of the Grassy Narrows First Nation, and the upheaval of population displacement in the Hellenistic period. Finally, the authors invoke and reformulate symbols of the four horseman of the apocalypse as rhetorical analogues to frame those aspects of contemporary collapse that elucidate the horror of the zombie. Zombies in Western Culture: A Twenty-First Century Crisis is required reading for anyone interested in the phenomenon of zombies in contemporary culture. It will also be of interest to an interdisciplinary audience including students and scholars of culture studies, semiotics, philosophy, religious studies, eschatology, anthropology, Jungian studies, and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012: The Zombie Apocalypse is a riveting tale of survival in a post-apocalyptic world overrun with zombies. A group of unlikely survivors are forced to band together to find salvation in a horror-drenched world. Led by Ryan and surrounded by undead monsters, the survivors journey across the wastelands in search of a precious and increasingly rare commoditylife. "But wait," I say. "The zombies in I Am Legend were just infected and could be cured, not similar to these types of zombies." I sit down on my couch and scratch my head. "I'm being so childish here; I'm comparing what is happening right now to movies. I need to figure out what needs to be done," I say before pushing myself off the couch and walking into my office. I grab a notepad from the desk as well as a pen before returning to the couch and sitting down. I push everything off the table and onto the floor before placing the notepad on the table. "Alright first things first I need to hunker down and hold my position for the night. First thing tomorrow morning I need to get out of the city, it isn't safe here, the population is too high. I can easily get overwhelmed and eaten."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even if you've never seen a zombie movie or television show, you could identify an undead ghoul if you saw one. With their endless wandering, lumbering gait, insatiable hunger, antisocial behavior, and apparently memory-less existence, zombies are the walking nightmares of our deepest fears. What do these characteristic behaviors reveal about the inner workings of the zombie mind? Could we diagnose zombism as a neurological condition by studying their behavior? In Do Zombies Dream of Undead Sheep?, neuroscientists and zombie enthusiasts Timothy Verstynen and Bradley Voytek apply their neuro-know-how to dissect the puzzle of what has happened to the zombie brain to make the undead act differently than their human prey. Combining tongue-in-cheek analysis with modern neuroscientific principles, Verstynen and Voytek show how zombism can be understood in terms of current knowledge regarding how the brain works. In each chapter, the authors draw on zombie popular culture and identify a characteristic zombie behavior that can be explained using neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and brain-behavior relationships. Through this exploration they shed light on fundamental neuroscientific questions such as: How does the brain function during sleeping and waking? What neural systems control movement? What is the nature of sensory perception? Walking an ingenious line between seriousness and satire, Do Zombies Dream of Undead Sheep? leverages the popularity of zombie culture in order to give readers a solid foundation in neuroscience.

Book excerpt: Most of humanity has turned into raging killers overnight. At a small university in east Texas, a few professors, students, and maintenance workers are fighting to stay alive. Mark, one of the professors, has had recurring nightmares about his estranged brother, a high-powered attorney in Dallas. Convinced his brother's family is in danger, and worried his brother may actually be part of that danger, Mark decides he must travel to Dallas and try to help them, if he can. The other group members must also make a decision: will they go with Mark or stay and hole up? After gathering supplies, Mark and a small group set off for Dallas. Finding the highways jammed, they must travel by boat up the Trinity River, not knowing how many zombies they'll meet on the river, or what they'll find when they reach Dallas. Zombie Apocalypse Now is a character-driven novel. Among the more memorable personalities are: • Lauren, a student working her way through college as a bartender, who battles zombies with a softball bat; • Kitchen, a hip young grad student who has seen every zombie movie ever made and wields a crowbar like the hero in Night of the Living Dead; • Blodwyn, a literature professor who quotes bits of Shakespeare as she brains zombies with an industrial mop handle; • Taylor, a senior maintenance worker who tries to keep the group together as things begin to fall apart; and• Woody, a maintenance worker who sees the apocalypse as a chance to get some of the things he's never had.
