Book excerpt: The following is an account of my journeys throughout the world. What started off as a couple of months to get away for an adventure turned into a ten-year journey of learning, enlightenment, hard times, and moments that will never leave me, including times of joy, sorrow, love, pain, near-death experiences, and experiences nearly worth dying for. During that time, I travelled to over 60 countries, set foot on every continent, including Antarctica; worked in over half a dozen countries; and saw relics from ancient civilisations and technological marvels of the modern world. I saw the highest peak on earth, the lowest valley, and so much in between. I visited places where they had never seen a white man before and countries ruled by governances ranging from democracies to theocracies to military regimes. I saw the cruelty that humanity can have for each other as well as the love that can bind us all. I fell in love, had my heart broken a few times, and broke a few hearts of my own. Carpe Diem

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carpe Diem If you want to explore Newfoundland and the maritime provinces of Canada, please bear in mind that you have to slip into a warming anorak even in summer. Every rain free day is a gift at the edge of the Labrador Current. Rubber boots and good rain wear are also essential. You can admire icebergs from Greenland on the island in the north as late as June to July, and the small harbours are often decorated with ice floes until well into the summer. But when the sun breaks through, this region of Canada opens up in all its diversity and drama. In the north, a former Viking settlement bears witness to the earliest community, even before the Europeans discovered America and later established themselves there. Small, picturesque fishing villages tell of a hard struggle for existence. In the past as well as today. Lonely stretches of land give flora and fauna the opportunity to face the harsh weather. The capital, St. Johns, impresses with colourful wooden houses and a lively pub culture. The oddball humour of the population is unique, and they all love their musical heritage. Carpe diem! Seize the day!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carpe Diem was written to transform student attitudes about their studies from those of "hourly workers" sitting in lectures and dutifully taking notes to an attitude which reflects student ownership of their education. The motivation for this book comes from compelling evidence that being an active rather than a passive learner will make a significant difference in life's successes. This book emphasizes that acquiring factual information is critically important, but knowing facts is not enough. Successful people must also acquire broad skills including writing, speaking, interpersonal skills, initiative, time management, assertiveness and reasoning ability. The specific teaching and learning techniques discussed include the discussion method, computer assisted instruction, laboratory instruction, simulation, the case method, intensive reading and writing, student journals, and cooperative learning including student affairs activities. Carpe Diem also provides the rationale for these learning techiques. In addition, it helps students develop a personal plan and connects that plan with active learning outcomes. Finally, the book offers appendices on the relevance of specific general education subjects and on how to choose a college that supports active learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Figures of a Changing World offers a dramatic new account of cultural change, an account based on the distinction between two familiar rhetorical figures, metonymy and metaphor. The book treats metonymy as the basic organizing trope of traditional culture and metaphor as the basic organizing trope of modern culture. On the one hand, metonymies present themselves as analogies that articulate or reaffirm preexisting states of affairs. They are guarantors of facticity, a term that can be translated or defined as fact-like-ness. On the other hand, metaphors challenge the similarity they claim to establish, in order to feature departures from preexisting states of affairs. On the basis of this distinction, the author argues that metaphor and metonymy can be used as instruments both for the large-scale interpretation of tensions in cultural change and for the micro-interpretation of tensions within particular texts. In addressing the functioning of the two terms, the author draws upon and critiques the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, Roman Jakobson, Christian Metz, Paul Ricoeur, Umberto Eco, Edmund Leach, and Paul de Man.

Book excerpt: The message of this extraordinary election [in November 2010] is clear enough: the American citizenry has rejected the secular dogma, socialist policies, and machine-driven politics that comprise the Obama agenda. Now, the question is whether President Obama and his Democratic Party will accept the will of the people and change the destructive course upon which they have set this country. . . . [F]irst and foremost, Republicans must fight to dislodge the secular-socialist machine whose methods and goals are described in this book. This machine has driven America so deeply into debt, and has so fundamentally changed the relationship between the American citizenry and our government, that our childrenâ??s future is now imperiled. We cannot assume that after the 2010 election, the machine will simply accept the will of the people. After all, the very purpose of a political machine is to thwart the will of the people. - From the introduction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concise and accessible, this guide to teaching the art of poetry from Shakespeare to contemporary poets enables anyone to learn about how poets approach their art. Teachers can use this book to explore any facet or era of poetry. Any reader can use it as an entryway into the art of poetry. Teaching the Art of Poetry shows poetry as a multi-faceted artistic process rather than a mystery on a pedestal. It demystifies the art of poetry by providing specific historical, social, and aesthetic contexts for each element of the art. It is a nuts-and-bolts approach that encourages teachers and students to work with poetry as a studio art--something to be explored, challenged, assembled and reassembled, imagined, and studied--all the things that an artist does to present poetry as a search for meaning. This book advocates poetry as an essential tool for aesthetic, cultural, and linguistic literacy. It portrays poetry as an art rather than a knowledge base, and methods for integrating the art of poetry into the school curriculum. The authors' intention is not to fill gaps; it is to change how poetry is presented in the classroom, to change how it is taught and how students think about it. Teaching the Art of Poetry: * Emphasizes hands-on experiences. Over 160 exercises focus attention on the dynamics of the art of poetry. Activities include group work, peer editing, critical thinking skills, revising drafts, focused reading, oral communication, listening skills, and vocabulary, as well as mechanics and usage. * Features a week-long lesson plan in each chapter to aid the teacher. These relate the main aspects of each chapter to classroom activities and, in addition, include a "Beyond the Week" section to promote further investigation of the topic. * Promotes an integrated approach to poetry. The examples used in each chapter show poetry as a living tradition. * Makes extensive use of complete poems along with extracts from many others. * Does not talk down to teachers--is teacher oriented and jargon free.
