Book excerpt: Three surprising women, their lives riven by divorce both literal and metaphorical: Ellen Clayton, reeling from her husband’s decision to leave her after twenty years, finds meaning in caring for her teenage daughters and in her work as the veterinarian at the New Orleans Zoo. Her young assistant Camille, preyed on by a series of contemptuous men, experiences bizarre episodes in which she feels herself transforming into one of the great cats in her care. And Elisabeth Boyer, a passionate Creole aristocrat trapped on her husband’s antebellum plantation, finds deliverance in the form of a black leopard, a powerful, merciless ally from the wild. Their unfolding stories blur distinctions of time, class and social construct to reveal the ordinary and extraordinary measures required to make our fractured world whole.

Book excerpt: Raoul Felder, a take-no-prisoners divorce attorney, draws from his experience to show readers how to avoid an acrimonious divorce and move on with life There is nothing better than a good marriage. But when a marriage goes bad, there is no better option than divorce to give men and women a chance to start over. Handled wisely, divorce can be a beginning, not an end. It is the doorway to a new life free of hurt, anger, and resentment. Felder and Victor cover each phase of divorce, from knowing when to call it quits, to choosing a lawyer, to the final decree. They explore prenuptial contracts, mediation, alimony, child custody, same-sex marriage, and life after divorce. They also share some of the most important facts one should know such as: • The first offer a woman gets when divorce negotiations begin is usually the best. • In all divorces, income rather than assets determine who pays what to whom. • Divorce is about compromise. Divorce court is not a boxing ring. After years of watching how divorce can go tragically wrong, Felder uses his expert knowledge, including case histories from his list of celebrity clients, to suggest how to make divorce more fair, civilized, and painless.

Book excerpt: C.S. Lewis' novel, The Great Divorce, about a man who takes a bus trip from Hell to Heaven, is full of fascinating characters and conversations. C.S. Lewis Goes to Heaven is the first book dedicated to exploring this story, revealing many important secrets that have gone undetected since its publication in 1946. Discover how leaving a train station in the wrong direction provided Lewis a model for Hell. Learn the real names of an Impressionist painter and a famous detective writer that Lewis placed (anonymously) in Hell. With considerable detective work of his own, David Clark carefully expands ideas found in The Great Divorce using supporting references from Lewis' personal correspondence and other books, particularly Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, Surprised by Joy and Letters to Malcolm.* * * Clark looks at the story through three different lenses. First, he introduces the characters and their interactions chapter by chapter, including a brief narrative so readers new to Lewis will feel at home. Second, he reveals how even the book's landscapes convey the theology of Lewis. Then the author comes "alongside" Lewis, explaining his theological ideas and insights, showing their far-reaching implications, and providing scriptural references. By these three approaches, the astonishing grasp of Lewis' theology is revealed in accessible language. The book concludes with three appendices, including 40 pages of historical character sketches, literary references, and concepts.* * * Considering that Lewis himself thought it surpassed his classic book, The Screwtape Letters, it's regrettable that The Great Divorce has been neglected for so long. Now for the first time, there is a comprehensive guide to help readers appreciate this profound and entertaining novel, and be awestruck by the grace of God it reveals. * * * "If you want a great guide to The Great Divorce, you can't do better than David Clark, who introduces readers to a host of fascinating historical and literary characters - illuminating this popular novel with theological insight and devotional delight. Clark's tour of C. S. Lewis' version of Heaven and Hell provides a truly refreshing holiday." * * * Terry Lindvall, author of Surprised by Laughter: The Comic World of C.S. Lewis

Sample Book Insights: #1 I had been walking for hours in the rain, and I had reached the end of the town. I was standing in a busy queue by the side of a long, mean street. Evening was closing in, and it was raining. I had been wandering for hours in similar mean streets, always in the rain, always in evening twilight. #2 The passengers were not pleased when the bus driver arrived. They fought to get on the bus, and the last person to get on was me. The bus was half full, but I chose a seat at the back.

This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK C.S. Lewis' The Great Divorce first appeared serially in the Anglican publication The Guardian in 14 installments from November 1944 to April 1945, the same publication that published Lewis' The Screwtape Letters in 1941. Influenced by Lewis' own experiences as a soldier in World War I and with World War II still raging at the time of its creation (it was written in 1943), The Great Divorce emerged at a time when the question of how a benevolent God could allow such unprecedented human suffering was on the minds of thinkers great and small. The title refers to Romantic poet, illustrator, and author William Blake and his work, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790). Both works attempt to describe, in contemporary terms, the author's conception of a Christian Heaven and Hell. For Blake, the two are married as fluid parts of the same dynamic, unified order. Lewis presents their divorce, if not from an interrelationship then from the idea that there can be an afterlife in which one enjoys the best of both "If we insist on keeping Hell (or even Earth) we shall not see Heaven: if we accept Heaven we shall not be able to retain even the smallest and most intimate souvenirs of Hell." EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Feeling miserable after his conversation with the Hard-Bitten Man, the narrator is plagued with doubt, wondering if the whole business of the bus trip is merely meant, as the Hard-Bitten man implied, for the angels to mock the damned. Troubled, he journeys on to a thick wood where he spies a Well-Dressed Woman trying to hide herself from an angel. The woman is ashamed of what she's wearing compared to the angels, and despite the angel's insistence it is of no consequence, she can't relinquish her vanity. The angel then blows a loud horn that summons a herd of enormous unicorns, shaking the ground with their stampede. The woman, frightened, screams and leaves, as does the narrator. In this chapter Lewis pokes fun at the rather flimsy vanity people (in this case a woman) cling to when they become ashamed to participate in something-even Heaven-because they don't feel they have something appropriate to wear for the occasion. "How can I go out like this among a lot od people with real solid bodies?," she asks. "It's far worse than going out with nothing on would have been on Earth. Have everyone staring through me."
