Book excerpt: A work of horror genius from the Godfather of zombie film-making, George A. Romero, and celebrated writer Daniel Kraus . . . It begins with one body. A pair of medical examiners find themselves facing a dead man who won't stay dead. It spreads quickly. In a Midwestern trailer park, an African American teenage girl and a Muslim immigrant battle newly-risen friends and family. On a US aircraft carrier, living sailors hide from dead ones while a fanatic preaches the gospel of a new religion of death. At a cable news station, a surviving anchor keeps broadcasting, not knowing if anyone is watching, while his undead colleagues try to devour him. In DC, an autistic federal employee charts the outbreak, preserving data for a future that may never come. Everywhere, people are targeted by both the living and the dead. We think we know how this story ends. We. Are. Wrong. 'A horror landmark, a work of gory genius.' JOE HILL, author of NOS4A2 'A monumental achievement.' ADAM NEVILL, author of The Ritual 'Like a lost Romero classic.' CLIVE BARKER, author of Hellraiser 'A sprawling, timely, scary epic.' PAUL TREMBLAY, author of The Cabin at the End of the World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monsters in Greek literature are often thought of as creatures which exist in mythological narratives, however, as this book shows, they appear in a much broader range of ancient sources and are used in creation narratives, ethnographic texts, and biology to explore the limits of the human body and of the human world. This book provides an in-depth examination of the role of monstrosity in ancient Greek literature. In the past, monsters in this context have largely been treated as unimportant or analysed on an individual basis. By focusing on genres rather than single creatures, the book provides a greater understanding of how monstrosity and abnormal bodies are used in ancient sources. Very often ideas about monstrosity are used as a contrast against which to examine the nature of what it is to be human, both physically and behaviourally. This book focuses on creation narratives, ethnographic writing, and biological texts. These three genres address the origins of the human world, its spatial limits, and the nature of the human body; by examining monstrosity in these genres we can see the ways in which Greek texts construct the space and time in which people exist and the nature of our bodies. This book is aimed primarily at scholars and students undertaking research, not only those with an interest in monstrosity, but also scholars exploring cultural representations of time (especially the primordial and mythological past), ancient geography and ethnography, and ancient philosophy and science. As the representation of monsters in antiquity was strongly influential on medieval, renaissance, and early modern images and texts, this book will also be relevant to people researching these areas.

This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where does reality stop and fantasy begin? In the case of The Walking Dead superstar Norman Reedus, the question is still very much up in the air. His Daryl Dixon is a very flawed, psychologically scarred character in a zombie-infested world. And there is much in his portrayal that is informed by a real life that is equally flawed and equally scarred. In Norman Reedus: An Unauthorized Biography: True Tales of the Walking Dead’s Zombie Hunter, the first detailed look at Norman Reedus’ life and times, you will get it all. The good, the bad and the ugly. This book chronicles his days as a defiant young man in a fractured but ultimately liberating family life, allegations of physical abuse from Reedus himself, to his struggles in the Los Angeles art underground, alcohol problems that saw him in AA and, for a time, homeless, his breakthrough in acting, modeling and the slow, steady and never boring journey through love, fatherhood and his often truly odd professional choices. You’ll discover why Reedus said thanks but no thanks to an offer to play opposite a reigning superstar, how he became Daryl Dixon and how The Walking Dead changed his life. Oh yes, there is that penchant for roadkill. New York Times Bestselling author Marc Shapiro has dug deep, tracking down people who knew him way back when as well as in the here and now for original interviews. They were willing to talk and they revealed stories about Reedus that even the most fanatic fans won’t know. The author’s research was relentless, digging into deep, dark and obscure corners. Norman Reedus’ world is about real life wrapped around a world of fantasy. Norman Reedus: The Unauthorized Biography: True Tales of the Walking Dead’s Zombie Hunter pulls no punches, tells only the truth and leaves the rest up to the reader. Which ultimately is the way Norman Reedus would want it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parenting is difficult under the best of circumstances--but extremely daunting when humanity faces cataclysmic annihilation. When the dead rise, hardship, violence and the ever-present threat of flesh-eating zombies will adversely affect parents and children alike. Depending on their age, children will have little chance of surviving a single encounter with the undead, let alone the unending peril of the Zombie Apocalypse. The key to their survival--and thus the survival of the species--will be the caregiving they receive. Drawing on psychological theory and real-world research on developmental status, grief, trauma, mental illness, and child-rearing in stressful environments, this book critically examines factors influencing parenting, and the likely outcomes of different caregiving techniques in the hypothetical landscape of the living dead.

Book excerpt: From Victor Halperin's White Zombie (1932) to George A. Romero's landmark Night of the Living Dead (1968) and AMC's hugely successful The Walking Dead (2010-), zombie mythology has become an integral part of popular culture. In a reversal of the typical pattern of adaptation, the zombie developed onscreen before appearing in short stories and comic books during the 20th century, and more recently as subjects of more traditional novels. This collection of new essays examines some of the most influential and inventive zombie literature, from the early stories to the most recent narratives, including some told from a zombie perspective.
